“I’ve got diabetes. What am I supposed to eat?”
Actually, there are no foods that are completely off limits for people with diabetes. If you’re already a sensible eater, you may not have to make BIG changes to your diet. You might just need to be more aware of how much of a good thing is too much, as well as the importance of consistent meal times.
You should start by paying attention to carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the fiber, sugars and starches that are present in many foods. When you eat foods containing carbs, you supply energy to your body. And trigger a rise in your blood glucose levels.
Since one of the keys to living well with diabetes is keeping your blood glucose levels in an appropriate range throughout the day, it’s important to moderate your carb intake.
Your doctor or Registered Dietitian can help you with setting your carb goals.
